Humble Beginnings
It all started in 1974 when founder Jeff McMullin began milling logs in Gasquet CA with his homemade Alaskan chainsaw mill. It didn’t take long to realize that this particular technology, while exciting for a first timer, wasn’t going to cut it.
He purchased his first real sawmill in 1976, a Mighty Mite 412 Volkswagen powered “portable” circle sawmill. It was set up and moved to many different locations for a few years – wherever the logs were. Usually to USFS timber sale landings where “cull” logs were left behind to burn in the fall.
Our Mill Expands and Finds a Home
A permanent location was finally purchased in 1990 on the former site of the Standard Veneer Mill in Crescent City, northwest corner of the Redwood Belt just south of the Oregon border. From this point on, the logs were brought to the mill – a big improvement. More adjacent parcels were eventually acquired, to the tune of 7 acres contiguous. There are now 3 sawmills, 2 dry kilns, all electric. Feeding and handling operations are a John Deere 644G log loader and 3 Hyster forklifts.
Buildings and sheds were constructed to give over 10,000 square ft of dry storage, supplemented by a 3 acre air dry yard holding 200,000 board feet of stickered lumber.
